Abstract

The basil leaves (Ocimumtenuiflorum L.) is one of the plants that used as antihypertensive. It contains the compound of flavonoid, alkaloid, tannin, saponin, triterpenoid, and essential oil. The aimed of this research was to prove the effect of antihypertensive from basil leave ethanolextract (BLEE)in MSG-induced hypertensive rats and determine the effect pettern based on dose. This research used the experimental method with randomized matched pre-test and post-test control group design. Hypertensiverats induce with MSG 100 mg/kgBW/day(p.o) for 14 days. As much as 25 hypertensive rats were divided into five groups. They arecontrol hypertension (0.5%CMC-Na 12.5 mL), positive control (Furosemide 5.04 mg/kgBW/day) and BLEE (125, 250, and 500) mg/kgBW/day. The extractswere given once a day for 14 days (p.o). Observed data is the differences in systole and diastole blood pressure before and after treatment(extracts) and decrease in systole and diastole blood pressure of the rat after extract treatment. The dataanalyzedby using paired T-test or Wilcoxon, and the decrease of the sistole and diastole blood pressure analyzed by One Way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney test. The result showed that BLEE (125, 250, and 500) mg/kgBW/day hadtheantihypertensive effect on MSG-induced hypertensive rats. However, the antihypertensive effect of BLEE does not follow a dose-dependent pattern in both systole and diastole blood pressure.
