Abstract

Infection is a type of disease which is suffered by many people in Indonesia, one of the causes is bacteria. Common types of pathogen bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus mutans. Ethanol extract of pineapple (Ananas comosus Merr) peels has been shown to have antibacterial activity. Fractionation with n-hexane solvent may dissolved non-polar compounds of ethanol extracts of pineapple peels which suspected having antibacterial activity. The aim of this research was to find out antibacterial activity of n-hexan fraction of ethanol extract of pineapple peels against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus mutans and also to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of those bacterias. Extraction method was maceration with solvent of 96% ethanol. Fractionation using n-hexane solvent by liquid-liquid partition. Antibacterial activity test used liquid dilution method, with concentration series 150; 200; 250; 300 and 350 μg/mL. Positive control used chloramphenicol 125 µg/mL while the negative control used DMSO 20%. Data analysis was performed by determining MIC value of n-hexane fraction characterized by no growth of test bacteria showed by clarity of test solution on lowest concentration in each culture of test bacteria. The results showed that n-hexane fraction of ethanol extract of pineapple peels had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis with MIC value 250 μg/mL, while Streptococcus mutans had MIC value 300 μg/mL.
