Abstract

Diplomacy is an art of international relations. Where diplomacy is very complex, it has different characteristics and methods for each country. The case of hijacking Indonesian-flagged vessels carried out by the Abu Sayyaf Group was the most recent event for Indonesia. The Abu Sayyaf group is a separatist group from the Southern Philippines who has carried out criminal actions such as hijacking ships with hostages by asking for ransom money from the state or the families of victims who were taken hostage. In 2016 there were two Indonesian ship hijackings carried out by the Abu Sayyaf Group. The government tried to free the hostages through the practice of total diplomacy, it‟s called Multitrack Diplomacy by involving many actors in the release. The large number of actors involved actually opened up a wider and easier diplomatic path so that this was the factor in the success of Indonesia's diplomacy in the release of the Abu Sayyaf hostage.
