Abstract
Pluralistic societies of course have diverse cultures and aspirations, but they should have the same position, no superiority between one ethnic, ethnic or social group with another. But sometimes differences create conflict between them. So as an effort to overcome the problem, the concept of pluralism arises. The plurality of people demands an inclusive and tolerant religious attitude. Therefore the focus of this research problem is How thinking KH. Abdurrahman Wahid about pluralism? How is the relevance and implication of the concept of pluralism KH. Abdurrahman Wahid in the perspective of Islamic education? The data collected in this study is taken through a document (literature) with a philosophical and historical approach. So the research is a research with Library Research that is qualitative. The data source of this research using primary, secondary and theoretical data source. After collected data is analyzed by Content Analysis method by interpreting text or content analysis of a thought. The findings of the study indicate that according to Gus Dur in the face of pluralism is to place every citizen equal to other groups in any case without any discrimination and injustice. Critical attitude must be done to provide input for the improvement of life. The universal values of Islam are more important than formalization of Islam which is only legal-formal, which tends to prioritize the substance of Islam because then the universal values of Islam belong not only to Muslims but also to non-Muslims such as: democracy, justice and equality. Education is the most effective institution and medium in managing diversity. Islamic education which is a sub-system of national education has a big enough contribution in the effort to transform the values of religiosity, nationality, and humanity to learners. In dealing with multi-ethnic and multi-religious plurality of society, it needs a paradigm of education that is tolerant, inclusive and oriented towards social piety by not forgetting individual piety. The way of learning must be changed from the lecture method to problem solving, from memorizing the material as much as possible to the mastery of the methodology, from viewing science as the final result to view science as a dynamic process. Educators view students as autonomous persons with all their potential, educational materials should include universal values of religion that include values of equality, justice, openness, honesty and courtesy, so that creativity will be created by learners.
