Abstract

The previous studies reported that carrot juice had an antihypertensive effect. This study aims to prove the antihypertensives effects of carrot tuber ethanol extract (CTEE) in MSG-induced hypertensive rats and to set the pattern of its antihypertensive effect based on dose. This study used randomized pre-test and post-test matched control group design. CTEE was prepared by using maceration method with ethanol solvent 70%. The hypertension rats induced with MSG 100 mg/kg BW/day for 14 days. The 25 hypertension rats were grouped into five treatment groups, hypertension control (CMC-Na 0,5% 12,5 mL/kg BW/day), positive control (furosemide 5,04 mg/kg BW), and CTEE (100 ; 200 and 400) mg/kg BW. The extracts were given once a day for 14 days orally. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure of hypertensive rats before and after treatment statistically analyzed by Wilcoxon test or T paired, while the blood pressure decrease of hypertensive rats that got treated with CTEE was analyzed by one way ANOVA test. The results showed that CTEE (100, 200 and 400) mg/kg BW/day for 14 days had antihypertensive effect on MSG-induced hypertensive rats. However, the antihypertensive effect of CTEE does not follow a dose-dependent pattern in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
