Abstract

Ethanol and methanol extract white cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) were able to inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus bacteria. The fractionation of the extract using water purposed that polar compounds will separate from non-polar and semi-polar compounds. This study aim were to compared antibacterial activity of water fraction derived from ethanol and methanol extract of white cabbage. White cabbage was macerated with 96% ethanol and methanol solvents, then evaporated with rotary evaporator. Both extracts are partitioned using n-hexane and water. The water fraction was freeze dried and tested its antibacterial activity by broth dilution method at serial concentration 10; 20; 30; 40; 50 mg/ml and as a positive control used chloramphenicol sodium succinate solution. The data obtained was Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) which is the lowest concentration able to inhibit the growth of test bacteria shown with clarity on broth media. MIC values showed differences in antibacterial profile against E. coli and S. aureus. The MIC value of the water fraction of methanol extract was 20 mg/mL against E.coli and S. aureus bacteria, whereas the MIC value of the water fraction of ethanol extract was 20 mg/mL against S. aureus and 30 mg/mL against E. coli.
