Abstract

Chayote fruit (Sechium edule) Swartz. is one of the plants which have an antihypertensive effect and contains alkaloids, saponins, kardenollins or bufadienolides, and flavanoid. This research is aimed to prove the antihypertensive effect of chayote ethanol extract (CEE) on MSG-induced hypertensive rats and to determine its antihypertensive effect based on dose. This research was an experimental using randomized pre-test and post-test matched control group design. Sample were 25 male Wistar rats treated with MSG 100 mg/kg BW/day (P.O) for 14 days to induce hypertension until blood pressure of rat ≥150 mmHg. Hypertensive rats were divided into five treatment groups, were hypertensive control group (0.5% CMC-Na 12.5 mL/kg BW/day), positive control group (furosemide 5.04 mg/kg BW/day), and treatment CEE (33, 66 and 132) mg/kg BW/day. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure of hypertensive rats before and after treatment statistically analyzed by Wilcoxon and T-paired test and a decrease in blood pressure after the treatment were statistically analyzed by One Way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis test. The result shows that CEE (33, 66 and 132) mg/kg BW/day had the antihypertensive effect on MSG-induced hypertensive rats. However, the antihypertensive effect of the CEE does not follow a dose-dependent pattern.
