Abstract

Doxorubicin was an chemotherapy agent with nephrotoxic side effects through the formation of free radicals. Antioxidant activity is required for leaves red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor L.) contains flavonoids that have antioxidant activity. This research aims to attest nefroprotective effects of ethanolic extract of red spinach in rats doxorubicin induced. This research was experimental research with randomized matched post test only control group design. 25 wistar strain rats were divided into 5 groups at random. Group I as normal control was given 0.9% NaCl, group II as nephrotoxic control was given doxorubicin dose 5mg / kgBB, group III, IV and V were EEDBM therapy group with consecutive doses 250, 500 and 1000mg / KgBB respectively and doxorubicin dose 5mg / KgBB. Doxorubicin was given on day 1, 5, 9 and 13 by i.p and EEDBM was given one time a day for 14 days by p.o. Examination of BUN, serum creatinine and renal histopathology as a parameter of kidney damage was performed on day 15. Data were analyzed for normality (Shapiro-Wilk) and homogeneity (Lavena). The data on creatinine and BUN levels were statistically analyzed by independent t -test and Kruskal Wallis. The results showed that doxorubicin causes the effect of nephrotoxic that is the increase of creatinine and BUN levels. EEDBM at dose 250, 500 and 1000mg/KgBB were not able to inhibit the nephrotoxic effects of in rats doxorubicin induced.
